Sri Lanka, Sept. 4 -- According to Professor Prageeth Weerathunga, President of the Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA), Sri Lanka's university system is currently facing a 50% shortage of lecturers.
He stated that while the system requires approximately 13,000 lecturers, only around 6,500 are currently employed.
The shortage is due to the departure of about 1,500 lecturers from the university system over the past few years.
The situation is particularly severe in faculties such as Medicine, Engineering, and Technology across many universities, with Peradeniya University alone losing around 150 lecturers.
