Sri Lanka, Aug. 29 -- The United Nations is raising concerns over the ongoing detention of a group of Rohingya refugees in Sri Lanka.

The UN Resident Coordinator to Sri Lanka, Marc-Andre Franche, issued a statement highlighting that a group of 116 people, who arrived by sea in December 2024, have been in custody in Mullaitivu.

While commending the Sri Lankan government and Navy for their rescue and initial humanitarian aid, Mr. Franche urged authorities to allow the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to register the group and secure their release from detention.

In his statement, Mr. Franche underscored that prolonged detention violates the rights of these refugees and hinders the search for a permanent solution.
