Sri Lanka, Aug. 28 -- The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations to Sri Lanka, Marc-Andre Franche, has expressed concern about the continued detention of a group of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

In a statement, Franche said that a group of 116 Rohingyas arrived by sea in December 2024 and have since been held in detention in Mullaitivu.

While commending the government and the Sri Lanka Navy for rescuing the refugees and providing humanitarian aid, he urged authorities to grant access to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in line with a long-standing agreement with the government, and to begin the registration process.

He emphasized that the UNHCR has again offered to register the refugees so they can be released from detention.
