Srilanka, Dec. 1 -- The United Nations took steps yesterday to activate its emergency coordination system to launch a joint response with Sri Lankan government agencies and humanitarian organisations following the country's disaster situation.

The UN is undertaking a multi-sectoral needs assessment with disaster management authorities to identify the most immediate gaps.

This effort coordinates across several critical sectors, including food security, health, water and sanitation, education, protection, shelter, and early recovery.

UN Resident Coordinator Marc-Andre Franche stated that the UN is mobilising its teams to support the national rescue and early recovery efforts.
