Sri Lanka, May 18 -- Two people were killed and at least 19 others injured when the Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtemoc collided with New York City's Brooklyn Bridge last evening (17), according to Mayor Eric Adams.

The tall sailing ship, carrying 277 people on a goodwill visit, lost power before its towering masts struck the bridge while passing beneath it.

Authorities stated several crew members were standing on the masts, which snapped and crashed to the deck during the impact.

Of the injured, two are in critical condition, but all personnel were accounted for and no one fell into the water.

The Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer major damage and was reopened after an initial safety inspection.
