Sri Lanka, May 18 -- At least 25 people have died and dozens more are injured after powerful tornadoes ripped through parts of Kentucky and Missouri.

Officials in Kentucky reported 18 fatalities, while Missouri saw seven deaths, including five in St Louis.

The tornado struck Laurel County in southeastern Kentucky early Saturday morning, with officials anticipating a potential rise in the death toll. In Missouri, authorities reported significant damage, with around 5,000 buildings affected, roofs torn off, and power lines downed.

As of Saturday afternoon, approximately 140,000 properties in both states were without power.

Firefighters in St Louis were conducting house-to-house searches in the worst-hit areas.
