Sri Lanka, Aug. 31 -- Three excise officers from the Chankanai Excise Office in Jaffna have been arrested for allegedly attempting to take a Rs. 2 million bribe.

The arrests were made by the Northern Province Criminal Division.

Police said the three officers apprehended a man with heroin on a beach in the Madagal area, claiming they were officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau.

They then took the suspect to the Chankanai Excise Office, where they used his mobile phone to call his sister and demanded the money in exchange for his release.

The woman promptly informed the Officer-in-Charge of the Northern Province Criminal Division, who led a raid that resulted in the arrest of the three officers.
