Sri Lanka, April 17 -- A schoolboy has died after falling from a grease-pole being erected for Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Elpitiya. Police confirmed the incident occurred yesterday (16) in the Kanaththagoda area.

Police reports indicate the accident happened at the playground near the Sri Vijayarama temple in Amugoda, Pitigala.

The boy fell from the approximately 40-foot-high grease pole and was rushed to the Elpitiya Base Hospital, where he passed away.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place at the Elpitiya Base Hospital, and Pitigala Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

The 16-year-old victim was reportedly awaiting the results of his recent G.C.E. Ordinary Level examinations.
