Sri Lanka, April 1 -- A 19-year-old girl drowned while bathing at Nayaru beach in Kokilai this afternoon (31), police said. The victim was a resident of Pudukudi Iruppu.
The incident occurred when a group of 16 people, including a teacher and students from a course, were on a picnic and bathing in the sea. Two girls were swept away by strong currents, and the teacher who attempted to rescue them was also pulled into the water.
Navy officers managed to rescue the teacher and one girl, but the other girl went missing. Following a joint search operation by police, navy officers, and local fishermen, her body was found washed ashore behind the Nayaru Navy Camp.
