Sri Lanka, April 23 -- Prison officials at the Matara Prison fired shots into the air and used tear gas to control a clash that erupted at the prison.

In situation arose when attempting to transfer a group of inmates to another correctional facility.

While the situation is now reportedly under control, 26 female inmates have been transferred to the Angunakolapelessa Prison.

Police say that three prison officers sustained injuries while attempting to bring the situation under control.

The incident was sparked last evening, prompting the deployment of police and the STF to the scene to restore order.
