Sri Lanka, July 25 -- The Supreme Court has ruled that the fundamental human rights of Laksman Cooray, who served as a Superintendent of Police (SP) in Gampaha at the time, were violated by the police.
He was arrested by officers of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) over several charges, including the assassination of former Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.
The court determined that he was subjected to torture and unlawfully detained.
This decision was announced by Supreme Court Justice A. H. M. D. Nawaz, with the concurrence of Chief Justice Murdu Fernando and Justice Priyantha Fernando.
