Sri Lanka, June 19 -- The Supreme Court yesterday(18) ruled that the then OIC (Officer in Charge) of the Uragasmanghandiya Police and the OIC of the Crimes Division of the Uragasmanghandiya Police had violated the fundamental human rights of a young man by arresting, assaulting, and subjecting him to inhumane torture to extract a confession regarding a 2019 gold theft.

The court ordered both officers to pay Rs. 1 million each from their funds as compensation to the petitioner, along with court costs.

The compensation must be paid within six months.
