Sri Lanka, Feb. 28 -- The Supreme Court has ordered the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to pay annual interest on security deposits collected from consumers when providing electricity connections.
The court ruled that CEB must pay an annual interest of 11.67%, the rate it receives from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, to all electricity consumers, including domestic users.
The order was issued today (28) when the Fundamental Rights petition filed by Electricity and Renewable Energy Consumers Association Chairman Mahesha Bandara Ilangasinghe and Secretary Prasath Bhathiya Amarakoon was taken up. The petition sought payment of annual interest to consumers under Section 28/3 of the Ceylon Electricity Board Act.
