Sri Lanka, Jan. 26 -- Storm Eowyn, described by the Met Office as "probably the strongest" storm to hit the UK in at least a decade, caused widespread destruction, leaving over a million people without power and severely disrupting travel across the UK and Ireland.

The storm's impact was the most intense in "20 or 30 years" in some areas. A 100mph gust was recorded in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, while Mace Head, County Galway, experienced record-breaking winds of 114mph.

As of Saturday evening, 28,000 customers in Scotland remained without power, while Northern Ireland reported 140,000 homes and businesses still cut off. In the Republic of Ireland, approximately 460,000 customers were without electricity.
