Sri Lanka, Oct. 26 -- The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has announced that Sri Lanka will participate in a massive, region-wide tsunami mock exercise on November 5.
The drill is being organised by the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) and will involve 28 countries across the Indian Ocean region.
DMC Director General Major General (Rtd) Sampath Kotuwegoda stated that the island-wide exercise will place a specific focus on the Kalutara, Matara, Jaffna, and Batticaloa districts, while simultaneously involving all coastal and inland administrative divisions in testing preparedness and communication systems.
The exercise will simulate a magnitude 9.2 earthquake in the Sumatra Trench (off Northern Sumatra, Indonesia).
