Sri Lanka, Jan. 30 -- Approximately 100 new cancer patients are identified daily in Sri Lanka, with about 40 deaths resulting from the disease each day.

Community Physician Specialist Hasareli Fernando shared these statistics during a press conference held ahead of World Cancer Day.

The theme for this year's World Cancer Day centres on collective effort through the slogan "Close the Care Gap".

According to the World Health Organisation, 20 million new cancer cases were reported globally in 2022, leading to 10 million deaths.

Local data reveals that 35,855 new cancer patients were recorded in Sri Lanka in 2022, following 14,986 reported deaths in 2021.
