Sri Lanka, May 7 -- The Chief Prelates of Sri Lanka's Malwatta, Asgiriya, Amarapura, and Ramanna Buddhist Chapters have called on the British government to intervene in the preservation of sacred artefacts linked to the corporeal remains of Lord Buddha, recently unearthed in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The artefacts are currently at risk of being sold at auction.
In a letter to the British High Commissioner in Colombo, the Buddhist leaders expressed strong opposition to the planned public auction of a collection of jewels discovered in northern India.
They warned that such a sale would represent a significant loss to global heritage.
