SriLanka, Nov. 5 -- A 2024 report published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) indicates that the Maldives and Sri Lanka have become primary targets and major transit points for illicit drug trafficking operating via sea routes.
Sri Lanka and the Maldives are geographically close to major drug-producing countries in Asia.
Their large coastlines and strategic location make them key transfer hubs for drug traffickers.
The coastal areas around Mannar, Kankasanthurai, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Kalpitiya are predominantly used to bring in illicit substances like Kerala Cannabis and narcotic pills.
The southern seas are primarily used by traffickers to bring in heavier drugs such as Heroin and ICE.
