Sri Lanka, May 13 -- A salt shortage has been reported in the market due to delays in imports.

Consumers are claiming that some traders have increased the price of a kilogram of salt cubes to as high as Rs. 450. The Cabinet had previously granted permission for the Department of Commerce to import salt to address low production caused by adverse weather.

However, these imports have been insufficient, leading to the current scarcity.

Social media is also abuzz with consumer allegations that salt is being sold under different brand names.

CEO of the Lanka Salt (Ltd.), Dr. (Eng.) Ajith Shanmuganathan confirmed that the import of 40,000 metric tons of salt has been approved for the Lanka Salt (Ltd.), the National Salt Company.
