Sri Lanka, July 27 -- Preethi Padman Surasena was sworn in today as the new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The President's Media Division stated that he took his oath as the country's 49th Chief Justice at the President's Office.

His name was recently approved by the Constitutional Council for the vacancy created after Chief Justice Murdu Fernando's retirement.

Preethi Padman Surasena was sworn in as an attorney-at-law in 1989.

He then joined the Attorney-General's Department as a State Counsel.

In 2007, he was appointed as a High Court Judge.

He became a Court of Appeal Judge in 2016, served as the President of the Court of Appeal in 2018, and was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge in 2019.
