Sri Lanka, Feb. 9 -- A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of at least 7.5 struck north of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, according to multiple international research centers.
The German Research Center for Geosciences reported the quake at a depth of 10 km, initially estimating its magnitude at 6.89. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) later reported a magnitude of 7.6 at the same depth.
It remains unclear whether the quake caused any movement or damage on land. This is the strongest earthquake in the region since a 7.2-magnitude quake hit Haiti in 2021, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
