Sri Lanka, Sept. 5 -- Police are warning the public about the dangers of toxic gases in sealed, enclosed spaces like old wells, following a tragic death in Balangoda.

The warning comes after a 39-year-old man from Mulgama, Balangoda, died yesterday (4) after he lost consciousness and collapsed into a well that had been sealed for a long time.

According to police, the man and two friends went to a house in the Galtamyaya area of Kalthota to clean the well and make it usable again.

After draining the water, the victim entered the well to clear the sludge at the bottom.

It was then that he collapsed and was later pronounced dead.
