Sri Lanka, June 20 -- Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Indika Hapugoda has announced that from July 1, police will begin removing aftermarket modifications from private buses, trishaws, and other motor vehicles that pose a risk to passenger safety.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo focused on traffic-related incidents and safety, DIG Hapugoda underscored the urgency of the issue, revealing that 1,199 people have died in traffic-related incidents in Sri Lanka since the 1st of January this year.
Police statistics indicate that over 6 million vehicles operate daily on Sri Lanka's roads, with more than 500,000 vehicles entering Colombo city alone each day.
