Sri Lanka, May 15 -- Police have launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media depicting a young man and woman being assaulted and beaten with helmets in front of a fuel station.

The footage shows a group of young men attacking another young man with helmets.

A young woman who attempts to intervene is also struck several times.

Police have identified the incident as having occurred in front of a fuel station in the Thimbirigasyaya area.

The altercation reportedly broke out in the early hours of Wednesday (14) between two groups who had been sightseeing during Vesak.

Police stated that no formal complaint regarding the assault has been lodged at any police station.
