Sri Lanka, April 2 -- The Court of Appeal is set to reconvene today to hear petitions challenging the rejection of nominations for the local government elections.
Yesterday, the court ordered the suspension of elections for local government institutions where nominations were rejected until today's proceedings. Nearly 30 fundamental rights petitions have been filed by several parties, including the United People's Freedom Alliance and independent groups, challenging the rejection of nomination papers for multiple local government bodies, including the Colombo Municipal Council.
A bench comprising Acting President of the Court of Appeal Mohamed Lafar Tahir and K.P. Fernando issued the order after considering the petitions.
