Sri Lanka, May 16 -- The National Dengue Control Unit has reported that the number of dengue patients in Sri Lanka has surpassed 19,900 this year, with 2,178 cases reported in the first two weeks of May alone.
The Western Province has recorded the highest number of patients at 640, followed by the Ratnapura District with 386 cases.
Seven dengue-related deaths have been reported nationwide this year.
In response to the increasing numbers, the Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Specialist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, announced at a press conference in Colombo on Wednesday (13) that a special mosquito control week will be implemented from May 19-24 to curb the spread of dengue mosquitoes.
