Sri Lanka, Sept. 3 -- Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa stated that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) has been used in some instances to violate a person's human rights and to carry out political victimisation.
He called for a six-part investigation to determine if the covenant has been violated.
Premadasa made these remarks today during a meeting with members of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, led by Udaya Gammanpila, at the Opposition Leader's Office.
Premadasa emphasised that the ICCPR was created to protect human rights.
He claimed that a covenant designed to protect human rights, which has been empowered through local legislation, has been used for political witch-hunts.
