Sri Lanka, Dec. 25 -- The government is steering the nation toward a police state by obstructing freedom of speech and using law enforcement to suppress dissent.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted these concerns during a special statement, noting that the administration is stripping citizens of their right to access factual information.

He emphasised that media freedom remains essential for democracy as it provides necessary checks and balances, yet the state currently uses the police to threaten independent media outlets.

Democracy relies on four pillars-the legislature, executive, judiciary, and independent media-but the current leadership violates both public rights and the professional integrity of police officers.
