Sri Lanka, Nov. 2 -- Eight traders have been fined a total of Rs. 743,000 for violating the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act.

The charges levelled against them included selling goods and food items above the maximum retail price (MRP) and failing to display price lists.

This action followed a raid conducted by officers from the Nuwara Eliya District Consumer Affairs Authority, with the case being called before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate, Buddhika Dharmadasa.

Key components of the fines imposed were:

A fine of Rs. 500,000 was imposed on a trader for selling a 1-litre bottle of water, valued at Rs. 100, for Rs. 140.

Two rice traders were each fined Rs. 100,000 for selling rice above the stipulated control price.
