Sri Lanka, Aug. 7 -- The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council has taken action to capture and impound ponies that were roaming freely in the city.
The ponies were reportedly obstructing vehicle traffic and causing problems for tourists.
According to Nuwara Eliya Mayor Upali Wanigasekara, the owners of the ponies, who are primarily found around the Nuwara Eliya Racecourse, use the animals to earn an income from tourists but neglect their welfare.
He said that the animals, some of which are ill, eat food from restaurants and tourists and are not properly cared for by their owners.
