Sri Lanka, June 23 -- The National People's Power has assumed control of the Matale Municipal Council.

During the inaugural meeting held today (23), under the chairmanship of Central Local Government Commissioner Chamila Atapattu, Asoka Ajith Kottahachchi of the NPP was elected Mayor with 12 votes in a secret ballot.

Thevar Subramaniamge Mohan of the Workers' Congress was elected Deputy Mayor.

Meanwhile, all opposition members walked out in protest at the beginning of the session, against the woman member nominated for the mayoral post.

However, a quorum was maintained for the secret ballot despite their departure.
