At the inaugural meeting of the Municipal Council, Sunil Gamage, representing the NPP, was elected as the Mayor with 19 votes, with no votes cast against him.

Our regional correspondent noted that MPs representing the opposition, including those from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the United National Party, and the Podujana Eksath Peramuna, had left the council chamber when the secret ballot was held.

Meanwhile, Priyantha Sahabandu, representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, was elected as the Deputy Mayor unopposed.
