Sri Lanka, Aug. 30 -- Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, says a new system will be introduced to inspect vehicles before they enter expressways.
The minister stated that vehicles with substandard tyres or other essential spare parts will not be allowed to enter.
He added that a relevant gazette notification will be issued in the future to enable the necessary legal changes.
Ratnayake made the remarks at a recent Consultative Committee meeting of the ministry.
He also said that arrangements are being made to establish a welfare fund for drivers in the private transport sector, including those operating three-wheelers and vans.
The related bill is to be presented to Parliament for approval.
