Sri Lanka, March 16 -- A mother of three from Kandalama, Dambulla, attempted to set herself and her one-and-a-half-year-old son on fire following a family dispute.

The mother, who sustained serious injuries, is being treated at Dambulla Base Hospital, while the child has been transferred to Peradeniya Teaching Hospital due to severe burns, a hospital spokesperson said.

According to police, the woman took this step after facing repeated harassment and physical abuse from her husband, who had also thrown her out of their home.

The incident occurred while the woman's other two daughters, aged seven and nine, were at school. The husband reportedly extinguished the fire on the child's body upon returning home.
