Sri Lanka, Dec. 19 -- The 2026 budget for the Ratnapura Municipal Council, which is held by the National People's Power (NPP), was defeated for the second time today (19).

According to local reports, the budget failed by a narrow margin, receiving 13 votes in favour and 14 votes against.

All 27 members of the municipal council were present for the crucial session today.

This follows an earlier defeat on December 12, where the maiden budget was rejected by a majority of just one vote (12 in favour to 13 against, with two members absent).

Under local government laws, the repeated failure to pass a budget can lead to significant administrative hurdles for the ruling party in the council.
