Sri Lanka, Sept. 8 -- A dispute has arisen between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education over a proposal to teach about condom use in Sri Lankan schools.
The Health Ministry's National STD/AIDS Control Programme is pushing for the inclusion of HIV and other sexually transmitted infection prevention methods, including condoms, in the school curriculum.
Officials argue that the current syllabus is inadequate, leaving students uninformed about vital prevention strategies.
This is supported by findings from a recent review by the National AIDS Council, and a 2024 survey which showed a decline in student awareness of HIV/AIDS.
