Sri Lanka, Aug. 28 -- Hali-ela police have arrested a 51-year-old mason on charges of abducting and raping a 13-year-old schoolgirl, who is now reportedly two months pregnant.

The suspect, who lives next door to the victim in the Alawathenna area of Udadompe, allegedly took the Grade eight student to a hut near his house and sexually assaulted her, threatening her with death if she revealed the incident.

The girl's family became suspicious when she suffered from persistent vomiting and took her to a doctor, and later to Demodara Hospital, where the pregnancy was confirmed.

The arrest was made based on the girl's statement to the police. Further investigations are being conducted by OIC Hali-ela police, CI Sugath Ranasinghe.
