Sri Lanka reached 229/9 at stumps on day one of the 2nd Test against Australia in Galle, with Dinesh Chandimal top-scoring with 74 and Kusal Mendis unbeaten on 59*.
Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were the standout bowlers for Australia, claiming three wickets each. Starc's reverse swing was effective, while Lyon's variation in speed and length troubled the Sri Lankan batsmen. Lyon now stands at 549 Test wickets.
Sri Lanka's top-order had a strong start, reaching 93/1 before a collapse of 4 wickets for 34 runs after lunch. A 65-run partnership between Kusal Mendis and Ramesh Mendis gave Sri Lanka some stability.
