Sri Lanka, May 12 -- The tragic bus incident in the Kotmale-Gerandiella area has claimed the life of a mother who, even while trapped in the wreckage, displayed extraordinary maternal love by shielding her infant.

The incident, which occurred early on Sunday (11), has now resulted in 22 fatalities, including 6 women and 16 men.

The identities of 9 victims are still being confirmed.

The mother's image, desperately trying to protect her child amidst the wreckage, was widely shared on social media.

Despite her efforts, both she and the infant's father succumbed to their injuries.

Their 8-month-old child is now orphaned.
