Sri Lanka, Jan. 18 -- A 22-year-old remand prisoner has died at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital after falling into a well within the Galle Prison premises.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of Gonamulla, Akmeemana.
The young man had been arrested by the Akmeemana Police on drug-related charges and was placed in remand custody following a court appearance.
The incident occurred on the morning of 15 January while he was bathing at the prison well. Reports indicate that he fell into the well and was subsequently rescued by prison authorities.
He was initially admitted to the Prison Hospital and later transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for intensive care. He passed away today (18).
