Sri Lanka, Dec. 16 -- Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Chanaka Solangaarachchi successfully performed a cervical spine (neck) surgery using an implanted device for the first time in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Chanaka states that this is the first instance of such a major neck surgery at Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital, and the first time in the country a device called a 'Standalone Cage', which avoids swallowing complications, has been implanted.

He is a specialist surgeon who previously carried out several other first-in-Sri-Lanka operations.

A trainer and consultant at several medical universities in countries including Malaysia, Dr. Chanaka is a renowned and skilled doctor often called upon for high-risk surgeries in many nations.
