The new Gambling Regulatory Authority Act is now in effect.

According to Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, the primary purpose of the legislation is to consolidate all existing laws under one framework.

He said that the main objective of implementing the Act is to regulate the industry but not to issue new licenses for casinos or gambling establishments.

The new authority will have the power to define which gambling activities are permitted, impose restrictions, and manage the cancellation of licenses.
