Sri Lanka, Sept. 4 -- The Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) has revealed that the government is in discussions over the possible closure of certain university faculties, citing a shortage of lecturers and inadequate infrastructure.

FUTA spokesperson, Senior Lecturer Dr. Charudaththa Illangasinghe, said such a move would mark a serious setback, as no government in the past has taken steps to shut down faculties under similar circumstances.

He stressed that the lecturer shortage has created severe challenges within universities and urged the authorities to recruit the necessary human resources and improve facilities, rather than considering closure.
