Sri Lanka, Jan. 17 -- Ground frost, locally known as 'Mal Thuhina', was observed in several areas of Nuwara Eliya early this morning (17).
While frost typically occurs in December, the phenomenon appeared at the start of the year, covering tea estates, botanical gardens, and vegetable plots across the district.
Ice particles were seen settled on the grass in Victoria Park and across ornamental flower beds and vegetable cultivations.
Local farmers and estate workers have expressed concerns regarding the impact on agricultural productivity.
Residents noted that the frost poses a significant risk of 'burning' tea leaves and damaging vegetable crops, which could lead to a drop in production.
