Sri Lanka, Jan. 30 -- Five individuals, including a woman and three youths, lost their lives in a series of road incidents across Palei, Wariyapola, Padukka, Bulathsinhala, and Egodauyana within the past day.

In Palei, a 64-year-old woman travelling as a pillion rider died when a tipper truck collided with a motorcycle while attempting an overtake.

Police took the truck driver into custody following the event.

Meanwhile, in the Abevalapitiya area of Wariyapola, a pedestrian died after being struck by a car on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura road; the identity of the deceased remains unconfirmed.

Further tragedies involved young motorists in other parts of the island.
