Sri Lanka, Aug. 28 -- A young elephant calf has died after being struck by a large lorry on the Dambulla-Habarana road this morning.

The ten-year-old elephant was part of a herd crossing the road to drink water from the Hiriwadunna reservoir when the accident occurred at around three o'clock.

The truck driver, a resident of Kekirawa, has been taken into custody by Habarana police.

Wildlife officials who arrived at the scene attempted to provide emergency treatment, but the calf died from its injuries.

The Minneriya Wildlife Office and Habarana Police are conducting a further investigation into the incident.
