Sri Lanka, June 12 -- The electricity consumers will start feeling the pinch from next month onwards, as the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) approved a 15% electricity tariff hike.
The move came into effect from midnight on June 11.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Commission, Professor K.P.L. Chandralal, who deemed it a "very fair decision."
This increase follows a proposal submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to the PUCSL to raise tariffs by 18.3% from June 1, aligning with International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommendations for a rapid cost-recovery adjustment.
Public consultations were conducted at district level regarding this proposed increase.
