Sri Lanka, Sept. 15 -- Police have arrested eight suspects in the Galewela and Bandaraduwa areas for allegedly illegally excavating for antiquities.

The suspects were also found with digging equipment and ritual offerings.

In the first incident, seven suspects were arrested yesterday at the Madipola area in Galewela based on a tip-off.

Police said the suspects were between 28 and 58 years of age and were residents of areas including Madipola, Welikanda, and Dehiattakandiya.

Separately, police in the Bandaraduwa police division arrested another suspect in the Navagiriya area.

Allegedly, the 63-year-old man was also found with excavation tools and offerings.

Galewela Police are conducting further investigations into both incidents.
