Sri Lanka, Dec. 29 -- Authorities will prosecute individuals for drunk and reckless driving under criminal law in addition to existing traffic regulations, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Control and Road Safety W.G.J. Senadheera announced today (29).

DIG Senadheera revealed during a press conference that the Inspector General of Police issued these instructions to curb the rising trend of road incidents.

Data indicates a significant increase in road mishaps this year, with incidents rising by 271 and fatalities increasing by 317 compared to the previous year.

While serious injuries have seen a slight decline, the overall surge is attributed largely to negligence, inattention, and substance abuse.
