Sri Lanka, April 13 -- Raids, numbering 1,320, were conducted yesterday (12th) to prevent the spread of illegal alcohol and drugs throughout the island during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season.

Authorities have ordered all retail alcohol outlets across the island to remain closed for yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Approval has been granted for the sale of alcohol only to residents of tourist board-approved three-star hotels and above, and special three-year license holders, strictly catering to the needs of residing tourists.

The Excise Department initiated these raids in accordance with these regulations.
